Maile with the boys

Jumped in Mark's troop transport vehicle this morning and headed out to Maile point.  Rob, Brian, Mark, and Paul ready to hit it.  We decided to not drive around like we normally do and just jump in right away.  It was super low tide with a side shore/offshore breeze.  Nice size sets rolling in once in a while... actually got better as the morning went on.  I had a couple nice rights and lefts off the peak, even with the crazy moving water and boils.. hard to paddle in with the winds accelerating up the wave face.  I got tired pretty quickly from no water time the past month, but still managed a good hour or so before getting caught inside on a couple emptied the tank.  So tired I managed to paddle in over the reef, scraped up my fins, back and a small ding on the board.. sheesh.  Anyways. good to get wet and there were for sure a couple OH sets rolling through with the boys on it.

Quick Sup

Went out for a quick SUP sesh this morning at sunrise.  Nice and calm and a decent little swell in the water.  I only had an hour, so paddled from Kaimana around the corner to Tongs and then came back and caught a couple of waves at Old Man's.  Much bigger than I anticipated and I lost my board for a long swim in at one point.  Met Edmund on his SUP and he was ripping.  Gave me a couple of pointers I'll use next time.  Off to SF for a week, so drydocked.  Stay stoked!http://www.surfkultura.com/media/hamilton%20stand%20up%20surfing%20roca%20puta.jpg

Fuji's

Nice Sunday morning surf.  Was heading up for my soccer game when Mr. Lee called and said.. it is a fine morning to surf, soccer sucker!  With that sort of challenge, I skipped my exit and headed to the Northshore to surf Fuji's.  Out on the 6'4" quad fish for some glassy, clean conditions.  Small kine waves rolled through with about six others in the lineup.  Caught some fun lefts zipping over the reef and plenty of other rights.  All was fun and chipper until a gnarly vibe came over the place when five guys paddled out. It turned negative quickly, so we all bailed... totally satiated morning and worth the rath of missing my game (the team lost 3-1).  Off to SF for a week, so no water time again.

SUP Session

Went out for a fun session yesterday with Hampig.  Beautiful blue skies, clear water and just a slight sideshore breeze.  We paddled down from Kaimana beach across to pops and then back along the shore.  I tried to snag a wave at Canoe's but waaay too many people all over the place.  I went over to Queens and quickly hopped onto a wave no one wanted.  Caught a nice right, and with the paddle was able to get ahead of the section and zip along the reform inside.  I realized I needed to wax the nose of my board as I tried to cross step for a hang five.  We then hugged the shoreline to get out of the headwind and caught another wave at Publics.  I tried to get Hampig to come out to Old Man's with me, but a decent set sent her back into the channel for turning practice.  I caught a couple of waves before my feet started to cramp up.  All in all, another fantastic day in the water.  Saw several other SUP boards launching when we left.  They are going to need traffic control soon with all these boards around ;)

Stand up paddle surfing is an aspect of surfing that has seen a recent resurgence in the Hawaiian Islands. For those that are not familiar with the sport, it entails standing on a large longboard and propelling yourself with essentially a canoe paddle. It is a sport practiced at one time by the beach boys of Waikiki with roots that likely trace back even further. Recently, it has been picked up by watermen as an alternative way to ride surf and as a means of staying in shape. The level of surfing on stand up paddle boards has sky rocketed in the last few years with feats such as Archie Kalepa's crossing between Molokai and Oahu and Laird Hamilton's recent foray out at Jaws on a stand up paddle board.
