Quicky and wet

Managed a quick hour session at DH this morning on the Bing.  Small nothingness, but good to get wet and the water was refreshing.  Was going to surf country, but getting ready for a big week of presentations in San Francisco and then off to ES for two days to finalize the purchase of our little beach front cabana.  The country of all "right point breaks" will be my little place to get away once in a while.  My friends and I are hoping to turn the house into a surf stop for friends and family and even do a little house swap once in a while so we can travel to other surf locals.  Quick trip down to meet the other partners and get all the paperwork signed.  Wish I could stay longer, but work calls.

Looking

Drove up early to Jeff's house looking for surf this morning with Brian and Chris.  The high tide was killing the remnants of the swell.  Too much water flowing out the channel at Fuji's as the 2+ foot high tide was flowing out and sweeping us across the lineup.  It was such a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky and blue skies everywhere.  Always good to get in the water.  As a bonus, we ate at the new Thai lunch wagon and met Opal, a guy I knew from San Francisco.  We played the where do we know each other game for a while.  Such good food.. a definite treat everytime I go the the country.

Leeward Side

Drove with Mark Sat for a long drive all the way from town to Yoko's.  Westside was looking pretty small and the high tide did not help things.  Nothing really happening anywhere except Paxton's favorite spot.  Showed Mark how to jump in off the rocks and we had a fun time catching a couple good lefts.  My arms were so tired from the two days of SUP that i had a hard time after my first two waves.  I was a menace! Oh well. had a great time getting wet.

big SUP waveriding

Headed out to old man's yesterday late afternoon for a quick SUP session.  I was surprised to see waves breaking at old man's.  Paddled out and caught a couple of waves.  Still tough to turn the board with strong offshores and a side wabble, but I did manage to catch a couple of nice waves.  Two other guys in the line up, but they were very supportive of my antics.  Had a great time, caught one wave that peaked right as I got on.. saw the nose start to dive down as I jumped back on the tail to pump.. saved myself, but it was a close call especially without a leash.

What's SUP?

Took hampig and amoeba out to Kaimana beach on Sat to play around on the SUP boards.  They both got the hang of it really quickly.  Forgot my new waterproof camera, so nothing to show.  Hampig really got the hang of the pivot turn quickly as she whipped her new board around without a problem.  I tried her new Bryan Caldwell pintail and it was super fun, much lighter, easier to turn, snappy.  I can't wait to try her new board in some waves soon.  Anways.. when it is flat in town a good way to get some excercise.  I should be going to the country, but time is not on my side.

New SUP

So we have a new SUP in the house.  Hampig got a new paddle as her New Year's present and then well, we just had to get her a new SUP (Stand UP PaTwfvtmncsoi8migit8tocvety2sxYd1iurmlj3a74fnadoqkp3enj68k ddle) board to match.  I worked out a deal to trade my Cooperfish Malibu Foil for the new SUP board, but it turns out my longboard sold in two days on consignment, much faster than I thought.  So I ended up just giving the cash (and $300 out of pocket) for the SUP board.  Hampig should have fun.. a bit big for her, but easy to start on.  Now the two of use can paddle to our hearts delight.  I just hope she wears her bikini ;)

Standup in 2007

So I've been playing around with a used standup board I bought a couple of months ago.  Mark on Maui gave me a broken standup paddle he put back together using some windsurfing parts.  It is totally fun and wow, what a workout.  My legs are often too sore to walk when I get back.  Fairy princess finally got into it and I bought her a New Year's present.. her very own standup paddle cut down for her size.  We found a mid priced fiberglass shaft with carbon blade made by surftech.  Still super expensive, but it should last her a lifetime.  I am going to see if one of my big longboards will work as a standup board for her.. maybe the 9'10" Model T or even the 9'2" ITP epoxy.

Here's a good article on standup surfing

  HISTORY OF BEACHBOY SURFING

The sport of Standup Paddling or what we call "Beachboy Surfing" is happening again at Makaha and Waikiki. It is a great core workout and fun to do. As a past Canoe Champion and Surfer I am very involved in the sport myself, both for exercise and fun; and have been working with the guys involved here in Hawaii to further this
great new paddle sport.

A little history:

Back in the 60's Beachboys in Waikiki like Duke and Leroy AhChoy started paddling and surfing on big surfboards and at times would take a cameras with them and take pictures of tourist. It caught on with the other beachboys and kids as myself growing up in Waikiki. The sport later died out with the introduction of the shorter lighter boards for surfing, except all but Leroy was still out as long as his age was able to let him.

The sport received regeneration with the whole Retro thing and the Maui guys like Laird, Dave Kalama and the Makaha Beachboys (Brian Keaulana, Bruce DeSoto & Mel Puu) began doing it again for exercise as it gave them an advantage to catch waves early with their speed, and train their core & legs for tow-in surfing. They also found when surfing you could utilize the paddle to help you carve into turns which really helped the maneuverability of the long boards they used.

Big board and a long single paddle.

BK at big Makaha.

A Special Place in BeachBoy Surfing History

John Zabotocky came to Hawaii in 1940 , John fell in love with the ocean and made his life there from that day on. John first started Beachboy surfing in 40's after seeing Duke and other Beachboys surf like this, and has been doing it with a paddle ever since. John was a regular athlete and competitor in many of the water sports happening in Hawaii in those days, including swimming, diving paddleboard and canoe racing. The the Beachboys of Old gave this new Waikiki charger the nickname of "Pearl Diver".

John is the Oldest BBS surfer in the world and the oldest regular surfer in Waikiki. John still goes out BBS in Waikiki a few times a week and is a well known icon to the Beachboys on the beach. John has his Board in one of the racks right there in Waikiki and has for 60yrs. With the help of the many younger Beachboys, his board gets to the water and then he is right at home as he has been for the last 60 yrs.

John is amazing as he does this sport of Kings regardless of his two artificial knees and bones, and his age. John Credits his good health to the ocean and the sport of Standup Beachboy Surfing. John is Married to Ann who is an avid ocean swimmer still today and a great athlete in her own right. John and Ann will soon be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. More Vintage Videos and pics of John coming soon, for now See him in action by clicking the play button on the video clip belo (may take a few minutes to load the first time, Quicktime plug-in required).
